15.1% more businesses started up in Mainland during the first nine months of this year compared to the same period last year. This was a faster rate of increase than in England where the number of company formations rose by 14.2% during the corresponding time period. In Britain 48,739 new businesses started up in September 2010, 4,377 more than the previous month.
There are wide variations in the number of start-ups across the country. So far this year Scotland (+26.7%) London (+21.8%) and the North East (+15.7%) have seen the seen strong year-to-date growth compared to the corresponding period in 2009. The West Midlands (+6.9%) and Wales (+7.3%) have had the weakest growth.
