15.0% more businesses started up in mainland Britain during the first eight months of this year than compared to the same period last year. This was a faster rate of increase than in England where the number of company formations rose by 14.0% during the corresponding time period.
There are wide variations in the number of start-ups across the country. So far this year Scotland (+25%) London (+21.2%) and North East (+16.8%) have seen the seen strong year-to-date growth compared to the corresponding period in 2009. Wales (+7.1%) and the West Midlands (+7.6%) had the weakest growth
