Business Activity – Small Business Start Up

1,793 business start ups in the Borough in the year to end December 2012 (source:BankSearch Survey Consultancy) this is similar to the 2011 level (1,779). The data shows significant monthly variation but generally the number of start ups was higher in the first quarter of 2012 compared to the last 3 months. While monthly data shows a downward trend in business start ups, with December returning the lowest number, this growth rate ranks Kingston upon Thames at 56 out of the 326 English districts. Grove Ward, which includes the area of Kingston town, had the highest number of business start ups at 213 in 2012 (chart 2).

Business start ups in the real estate, professional services and support activities formed 38.7% of all new business start ups, followed by 13% in the wholesale and retail trade and 12.4% in recreational, personal and community services.
