The August issue of the Monthly Economic update, includes a monthly focus on current economic indicators and their potential impact on GDP.

• In July 2011, 13,670 people of the working age population in County Durham were claiming Job Seekers Allowance; an increase of 874 persons on the June 2011 figure and an annual increase of 1,497 persons. The North East saw an increase of 2,750 people and Great Britain a rise of 46,758 people on June’s figure.
• Key out of work benefit claimants also saw a slight increase in the County over last quarter’s figure but showed an annual fall over the same period in 2010.
• 7.1% fewer businesses started up in County Durham during the first seven months of 2011 compared with the corresponding period in 2010. In July, there were 270 business starts, 70 (-20.6%) less than June 2011.
