BankSearch approached the British Bankers Association with a proposal to create a database about new business start ups in the UK in November 2007 and has been working with the BBA and their Small Firms Advisory Panel since then.
David Dooks, BBA Statistics Director, said: working with the main banks providing small business services, this new data source from BankSearch has built on the BBA's general monitoring of bank support, to identify the characteristics of new small businesses.
The BBA is the leading UK banking and financial services trade association and acts on behalf of its members on domestic and international issues. The BBA members, from 50 different countries, collectively provide the full range of banking and financial services and together make up the world’s largest international banking centre. The main high street banks had lending of £56bn to small business and held £54bn of deposits at end-September 2009.

BankSearch first approached the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) in 2003. The CML represents around 98% of the UK residential mortgage lending industry.
The CML's aim is to help foster a favourable operating environment in the UK housing and mortgage markets.
CML are the representative voice for the residential mortgage lending industry, and the central provider of economic, statistical, legal, research and other market information. This joint venture has already created the most comprehensive and timely mortgage completions database in the UK. The new mortgage lending data is also used to compile the UK House Price Index (DCLG) and factored into the Retail Price Index (National Statistics).
Our Regulated Mortgage Survey Interactive Database provides CML members and other data providers with mortgage completions data and benchmarking information. Building on this success, we launched in December 2007 'Mortgage Insight' which delivers business advantage by providing CML members' sales and marketing teams with a clear view of the housing market.
